We get it. You’re in high demand. You’re a talented coder with options galore. Atlassian and the others are practically throwing free beer and poker nights at you to keep you happy. The money’s good and the work's pretty good. So life’s good. We understand.

But we also know there's a few of you with itchy fingers.

A rare few of you who want the challenge to build something unique. To work on a challenge where the outcome is uncertain and your skills will play a direct role in determining which way it goes. A select few of you who are yearning for the thrill of pressing that button and launching your latest work into production without the layers of bureaucracy. Those of you who want to test their metal, and if proven, will be rewarded for getting on the ground floor.

It's our mission at the Wine Gallery to disrupt a powerful and entrenched industry and liberate the world of wine from the aloof, the exclusive, the confusing, and the pretentious. To open up the joy of wine discovery for the novices through to the aficionados, by reimagining what the wine retail experience can be for one of the oldest consumer products on earth.

To give you an idea, one of our first products is something we like to call "Spotify for Wine". We like to think of it as providing monthly wine adventures, customised to each member's unique tastes, delivered to their door. Where they can learn as much (or as little) about their wines each month as they like. We're a little over two years old, and we've just started to hit our stride.

And if the above strikes a chord with you, then we want you to help us with this mission.

Okay if you're still with us, here's the part you've been dreading. The part where they normally tell you that we have no money to pay you, no traction for you to build on, and no plan on how we're going to achieve our goal. They just need coders to make it happen right?

Well, we've got good news for you.

We've got traction with thousands of monthly customers for you to continue to delight. We've got the funds to pay you what you deserve thanks to a recent series A funding round. And we've got a strategy in place to take us to the next level. All we need is your skills and hard work to make it a reality.

You can expect to play a massive role in growing what we're building. We've got grand ambitions for where we want to take this baby, and you're going to play a huge part in getting us there. As a very early engineer (first three), you will set the tone of our engineering culture and will lay the technology foundation. It's a cross-functional role, and you will own and drive entire projects that span different technologies and systems, where you will start by making stack decisions, then architecting, coding, testing, and launching high performing software.

We're not saying it's going to be easy. But we suspect if you're the one we're looking for, then you wouldn't want it to be. So keep reading...

You'll be a great fit if you:

  • Have a customer-driven mindset;
  • Have fun being a generalist working on both the frontend, backend, and anything it takes to build tools to delight our customers;
  • Can jump in and get your hands dirty in many different areas even if you have not worked with them before;
  • Have at least four years of experience in full-stack development and strong SQL skills;
  • Are a self-starter: deciding what to work on + getting things done + managing yourself.

We think the below would make sense but is not essential:

  • Experience in Python and Django;
  • Experience in modern Javascript frameworks (e.g. React);
  • Experience in AWS;
  • Interest in Recommendation Algorithms and Machine Learning;
  • Launched a startup or side-project before, including a blog or open-source tool.

We know that engineers are the happiest and do their best work when they're empowered to build on their own daily schedule. We're the same. You can expect to work hard, but productively, with a focus on results, not face time. You'll be moving quickly and facing new challenges every day, but what your day looks like is up to you. Even if that means coding from your couch some days so you can focus.

We're a small but growing team and we all get to chip in with ideas on how to best put our new office together with everything we need to feel great and productive, and obviously, have a lot of fun while doing it.

Sydney offers one of the best lifestyles in the world, and we all like to take advantage of it. You will be more than welcome to join some of us for a surfing session on sunset after work, a morning run or even just trying out new wines as we brainstorm our latest ideas.

Compensation is $90k-130k + employee share options.

Oh and of course free wine.
