Meet the Maker : James 'Shiny' Scott form Shiny Wines

Shiny Wine is a relatively recent addition to the Tasmanian wine scene, and is already making waves. Based in the Tamar Valley, these handcrafted wines are produced by James 'Shiny' Scott. Shiny is a second generation Tasmanian winemaker who started in the wine industry at just 18 years of age! He studied in Adelaide before setting off around the world and gaining valuable winemaking experience working in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, California, Bordeaux, and New Zealand. These days he is happily back in his home state, producing the types of cool climate wines that he is so passionate about.

Shiny Wine focuses on producing minimal intervention wines, that let the Tasmanian vineyards and varieties speak for themselves. All the wines are handmade, bottled and labelled by Shiny and his mates. The focus so far has been on Syrah, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, with a focus on minerality and zestiness, rather than an abundance of fruit. The wines are floral, expressive and elegant, and have the acidity to last the long haul. This is a label to keep an eye on for the future.

Meet the Maker : Alex Sherrah from Sherrah Wines in the McLaren Vale

There aren't many wine regions on the planet which can compare to our own McLaren Vale. It's one of those places where everything seems to slot together beautifully; the climate, the range of soil types, the grapes that flourish there... and perhaps most importantly of all, the winemakers who have made the Vale their home. One such talent is Alex Sherrah, a man who comes with a hefty pedigree and whose vision and skill is pretty much unrivalled in the region. Once a winemaker's assistant at the highly-renowned Tatachilla winery in McLaren Vale, Alex went on to hone his craft and widen his palate in Napa Valley, before heading to the hills of Austria and the historic wineries of Burgundy in France.

Now that he's given up his day job as senior winemaker at McLaren's Coriole winery, Alex Sherrah has been putting all of his energy and vision into Sherrah - a newish winery based just a couple of miles away from where his viticultural journey began, run with some like-minded friends who bring even more scope and range to the table. The winery is all about allowing the winemakers to start thinking outside the box, and to begin putting their focus into exploring lesser-used grape varietals (alongside several tried-and-tested Aussie favourites) and making the kinds of wines they love to drink.

Meet the Maker : James Scarcebrook from Vino Intrepido

James Scarcebrook has been a wine communicator, wholesaler, retailer and now winemaker. From studying all facets of the wine industry over the years, he recently turned his hand to the making of the juice, and turns out he's a bit of a dab hand at it all. Whether it's down to his years of study or simply natural talent remains to be seen, but his first forays into winemaking over the past few years have yielded great results!
