The Chateau Richotey Virecourt is a quaint farmhouse situated on just over 10 hectares of prime vineyard land on the banks of the Gironde River, not far from the small region of Fronsac.
The soils here are clay over limestone, giving the wines power and freshness. The limestone really helps with acid retention in the wines, and this is used to great effect to keep the wines pure and balanced, despite the richness of fruit and the firm tannins.
The winemaking is simple and traditional, aging the wine first in cement tanks before transferring it to oak for a short period before bottling. The vineyards are really the thing here - a strong focus on growing healthy grapes in this famed region has pushed the small Chateau to greater heights every year.
For a small producer in a land of bog names, Richotey Virecourt is starting to make a name for themselves over the past decade or so, and with such age-worthy wines, its easy to see why.
