What you'll need:
- 2 red onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 50g piece of ginger, peeled and grated
- 4 crushed garlic cloves
- 1 tsp chilli flakes
- 500g braising steak or similar, cut into cubes
- 2 tsp Chinese 5 spice powder
- 350ml beef stock
- 4 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 4 tsp cornflour
- 2 tbsp clear honey
- Salt and pepper
Time: 4 hours
Serves: 4
Method
First
Fry the onions in a large pan in a little oil for about 8-10 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Add the ginger, chilli flakes, and garlic, and fry for about 2 minutes more.
Second
Season the beef well with pepper, and sprinkle the 5 spice powder all over. Add to the pan, and fry for 4 minutes, or until browned. Transfer the whole lot to the slow cooker, pour in the stock and the soy sauce, and cook for 4 hours.
Third
Once the beef is cooked, make a paste from the cornflour and some water, and add to the mixture with a whisk. Stir in the honey, and cook for a further 15 minutes until thick and glossy. Serve hot with boiled noodles, and enjoy.
